Jan ’09 – week 4

It’s a strange dilemma when you find that you can work best very late at night or very early in the morning…but you have no intention of sleeping through the day! I’ve been toying with solutions to this but haven’t quite found one. Napping is one solution, but it’s not always possible to find time for a nap during the day and even when you do, it’s hard to explain to anyone who tries to reach you during that time without sounding like an old pensioner or a lazy bum. After all, who else takes naps!? 🙂

So I’m somewhere in between…sometimes working really late, sometimes getting up really early. Playing the field with my work/sleep habits and seeing what’s best!

Past two weeks have been very full. What with planning my album launch, overseeing the revamp of www.rajkomusic.com, organising the next GigAid event and overseeing the work of Fitness4x4. But thankfully I’ve got some great people doing great work in all the different areas, and without that I would be completely snowed under. Speaking of which, what an amazing thing it was to wake up to snow! It made the whole of London look so beautiful – even the ugly parts! I’m sure for many people it was a real pain, but for me it was a real treat.

The album launch is the main thing on my mind at the moment. It will be such a landmark for me as an independent artist. When you first begin to contemplate trying to make a career of music, you picture somebody snapping you up and saying ‘hey there young fella, you’ve got GREAT potential…we’re gonna use that potential to help you make a career of this!’
And then somewhere along the line (for most of us) you realise that you’re invisible unless you make yourself noticed. And even when you’ve made yourself noticed, you’re probably still on your own until you make a few bigger waves and splash a few people! And being a ‘man of action’ rather than a dreamer, I thought to myself that instead of dreaming and hoping, I’d just do it myself. And 2years later, with the help of some amazing people…the album was completed! Now in Itunes, CDBaby, napster etc, and gradually coming to independent record stores. And so the launch next week is like the capping of a whole big period of my life and a stage in the journey.

And so it simply remains to quote from a great teacher who doesn’t often get quoted outside of religious circles,

“Your eyes are windows into your body. If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed, in greed and distrust, your body becomes a dank cellar.”

I’ll try not to squint this week…

Never underestimate the glory and rejuvenating power of the nap! My fellow Americans tend to frown upon naps but I find them to be worthwhile. Without a 20 or so minute nap every now and then I might find myself asleep at the wheel on the long commute home. That would be the opposite of good. Traffic here is bad enough.

I just downloaded your album from iTunes. It is wonderful. Very mellow and relaxing which is the perfect way to wind down from a crazy day. If you tour the US I do hope you make a stop in the Washington DC area. I look forward to hearing more!
